Located 36 kilometres south of the Sydney CBD, Heathcote sits within the local government area of the Sutherland Shire. Heathcote is separated into two parts by the local railway line. Heathcote West has a thriving residential community, and Heathcote East is home to two schools and a sports oval. There are 3 schools in Heathcote.

Heathcote railway station is on the Illawarra line of the City Rail network. It is located on the Princes Highway. There are regular services to the city centre which take approximately 50 minutes. A bus service also links Engadine with Heathcote.
Wedged between The Royal National Park to the east, and Heathcote National Park to the west, Heathcote is popular with bushwalkers. As one of the oldest towns in the Sutherland Shire, several buildings in Heathcote are heritage listed. Heathcote is serviced by a local shopping strip and is within easy commuting distance to the larger Engadine shopping precinct, as well as Wollongong to the south.
